Evil, manipulative Eunice Winslow is matriarch of the most prominent family in the town of Lebanon. Determined to find the right girl for Stephen, her son, Eunice coldly dismisses Sybil, his sweetheart, as a future Mrs. Winslow--wrong class and color. When Claire, fair-skinned and classy, comes to Lebanon, Eunice forces Sybil out of town, setting the stage for a hurt, lonely Stephen to fall prey to Claire's dubious charms. They marry but it does not last. Claire quiclly wanders back to Kingston to be with Clive, her new man.
Then, to Eunice's horror, her threat against Sybil is made void, the "wrong" girl is back in town and her love affair with Stephen is back on track! Stephen wants to marry his girl but his mother will not have. With a plan to eliminate Sybil in favor of another "right" girl, Eunice elicits Claire's input. In a tense, terrifying moment, Stephen meets Clive (Claire's lover) for the first time. And Clive is holding a gun....
