When her best friend Sylvia’s cousin, Freeman Byler, comes to visit for the summer on his own rumspringa, Emma’s already complicated world is flipped upside down by his unique charm and instantaneous attraction between them. The two are drawn to one another and spend the summer together as romance quickly blossoms between them. Their budding relationship, however, faces several obstacles with other offers of courtships, and discouragement of pursuing a courtship with one another. Emma faces losing the one man she believes is the one Gott has designed for her, and her childhood best friend when she voices the desire to leave for an English boy.
With Freeman’s inevitable return to Lancaster on the horizon, can their relationship survive all odds? Can she save her friendship with Sylvia? Or will Emma realize how remote their tight knitted community really is.
