My name is David Hollingsworth but I write as J D Carter; I was born in 1953 in Stepney in the east end of London. I come from a hard working class background where I was brought up in a time which was still badly affected by the war. My father was a docker and worked long hours earning just enough to put food on the table and to pay the bills. I had a happy childhood with good parents.
Our playground was the bomb sites that Hitler left behind and was a source of income from the lead pipes and roof guttering we used to sell, we also sold firewood as many people used a open fire to keep warm. I never got on with schooling and when I got to my secondary school I didn’t get on with the teachers either. That led to being held down by two of them across a desk while the head master gave me 6 of the best, and they were the best as he split both cheeks of my arse and drew blood. I may not have learnt a lot at school but I did have fun.
I also met my very best friend Johnny. I don’t remember us ever having a cross word or an argument. Even though he is not with us any more he still plays a big part in my life to this day.
I started work at 15 as a commercial artist but I wasn’t good enough. I stayed even though the pay was crap as I was having a good fiddle earning five times what they were paying me.
My teen years were one dead end job after another. I started to read after an ex-girl friend’s mum gave me the God Father, and I was hooked. It blew me away and gave me my love of books and reading I have to this day.
Being from the east end of London I go to know many different people who shall we say lived life to the full and didn’t mind how they earned their living. Some were friends, some were just people you heard stories about. Well it wasn’t until I met my wife Jacqueline that I myself settled down and had children and began to write using some of those stories and things I heard about as it gave me the inspiration for my books. This story “The Party” being the first to be published. I have begun the follow up and I’m really just putting together loads of ideas and hopefully you will be able to find out what lies ahead for young Alex Dicks.
I have two other novels in first draft about another character called Danny Wallace who I will be publishing at a later date. I think you will really like Danny.
I hope you can see I’m really not just a flash in the pan and you enjoy my books.
Many thanks.
